Music streaming up 16% in Québec in 2023

Montréal, June 12, 2024. – In 2023, there were 27.8 billion streams on on-demand audio streaming services in Québec, up 16% from 2022. Among the 10,000 most-streamed artists, the share of Québec artists was down slightly, from 8% in 2022 to 7.5% in 2023. Among the 20 most-streamed artists in Québec, two are from Québec: Les Cowboys Fringants in 6th place and Charlotte Cardin in 11th place.

These are the findings of the report La consommation d'enregistrements musicaux en 2023 au Québec (music recording consumption in 2023 in Québec) published today by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications of the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

Only 5% of top-streamed tracks are French-language Québec recordings

Among the 10,000 top-streamed tracks, the share of French-language tracks was 8.5%, with 5% from Québec artists and 3.5% from artists outside the province in 2023. The share of tracks from Québec artists in any language stood at 6.5%.

For comparison, 18% of physical albums and 27% of digital albums sold featured mostly French-language tracks. These two markets have been decreasing for years.

Pop music declined in 2023

The market share of pop music on streaming services was down in 2023 (-4 percentage points compared to 2022), while that of “R&B, hip-hop and rap” and “rock, alt-rock and hard rock” remained stable. Other genres saw their share increase, including “world, latin, afrobeat and reggae” (+1 percentage point) and country music (+1 percentage point).

Vinyl record sales still on the rise

Vinyl record sales rose 48% between 2019 (181,100) and 2023 (268,771). Meanwhile, CD sales dropped 66% between 2019 (2.1 million) and 2023 (0.7 million). In Québec, vinyl records accounted for 28% of physical album sales.
