Montréal, August 27, 2025. – In 2024, there were 31 billion streams on on-demand music streaming platforms in Québec. Streams on these platforms were up 12% in 2024, a more moderate increase than in 2022 and 2023 (16%). Among people who listened to music, 40% did so every day or almost every day using streaming platforms, while 35% did soon the radio and 20% on video-sharing platforms.
This was revealed in the bulletin Les pratiques d’écoute et la consommation d’enregistrements musicaux au Québec en 2024 published today by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications of the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
Impact of broadcasting and streaming platforms on French-language and Québec songs
Among people who listen to music, using the radio is positively associated with listening to French-language songs and music by Québec artists, regardless of age. However, this is not the case with streaming or video-sharing platforms.
Share of Québec performers remains low in music played on streaming platforms
The share of Québec performers on on-demand streaming platforms only accounts for 7% of music streamed in the province in 2024, a slightly lower proportion than in 2023 (7.5%) and 2022 (8%).

Pop music remains the most popular genre (29%) on on-demand streaming platforms, while alt rock (7%) and country (6%) music gained in popularity for the second consecutive year.

Les Cowboys Fringants marked the year 2024
Les Cowboys Fringants are the only Québec artists to appear in all four main lists of top performers for 2024. Their album Pub Royal was the top-selling album, and several of their songs—including L’Amérique pleure, La fin du show, Sur mon épaule, Les étoiles filantes and Toune d’automne—were among the top-streamed tracks on streaming platforms.
