Growth of music streaming slows in Québec

Montréal, August 11, 2026 – In 2025, there were 31.9 billion streams on on-demand streaming platforms in Québec, up by just 3% compared to 12% in 2024 and 16% in 2023.

The analysis published today by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications of the Institut de la statistique du Québec used data from Luminate Data to paint a detailed picture of music consumption in Québec.

Few Québec artists topping the charts

Québec artists accounted for 7.1% of all streams in 2025 (between 7% and 8% since 2022) and their presence remains stable, but limited. There is just one Québec name among the 20 most-streamed artists: Les Cowboys Fringants, in 12th place.

Old hits are gaining in popularity

On-demand streaming heavily favours established works. In 2025, half of streams (50%) came from tracks released more than five years ago, a steady increase since 2022. By contrast, newer ones – songs released within the past 18 months – account for just 28% of streams.

Decline in physical media sales continues

Since the advent of digital music, sales of CDs have dropped dramatically, from almost 13 million in 2004 to 0.5 million in 2025. Vinyl records, however, have been on the rise since 2008 and account for 0.4 million units sold in 2025. Sales of vinyl records have gone up by 311% since 2015.

Share of album sales by Québec artists also down

The share of album sales by Québec artists has declined for the fourth year. In one year, it fell from 24% to 18%.

The reason for the decline is a faster drop in album sales among Québec artists than those from other regions, for both CDs and digital albums. Also, vinyl records do little to promote Québec artists (8% of sales).

The French share of music sales continues to decline, especially in physical formats (CD and vinyl), where it went from 39% in 2018 to 11% in 2025.
