Québec, September 26, 2024. – In 2022, Québec’s gross domestic product (GDP) at basic prices in current dollars stood at nearly $505.2 billion, up 8.2% from 2021. All of Québec’s administrative regions saw their GDP increase in 2022. This was revealed in Produit intérieur brut régional par industrie au Québec, édition 2024 released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
GDP increased in all of Québec’s administrative regions
At the regional level, GDP growth only exceeded 10.0% in one region: Chaudière-Appalaches (+12.0%). The lowest growth rate was observed in the Côte-Nord region (+0.3%), mainly because mining activity declined compared with 2021. With the exception of these two extremes and the Nord-du-Québec region (+4.6%), GDP growth in the 14 other regions ranged from 5.0% to 10.0%.
Due to the size of their economy, the three regions of Montréal, Montérégie and Capitale-Nationale accounted for 58.8% of the province’s economic growth.
A new CMA added in 2022
In 2022, the Drummondville census metropolitan area (CMA) became Québec’s seventh CMA.
Although it only accounts for 1.0% of the province’s economy, the Drummondville CMA had the highest GDP growth rate at 11.4%. In the six other CMAs, this rate ranged between 7.2% (Saguenay) and 8.5% (Trois-Rivières).
When looking at the contribution of CMAs to Québec’s economic growth, the Montréal CMA ranks first with a 55.6% share. The Québec CMA is second, with 11.4% of the province’s growth.
The publication contains information, tables and graphs for each administrative region and CMA. Tables are also available on the ISQ’s website.
