Cannabis consumption habits in Québec in 2024

Québec, April 9, 2025. – According to the Québec Cannabis Survey conducted by the Institut de la statistique du Québec in 2024 among 15,197 people aged 15 and over, about 18% of Quebecers consumed cannabis in the 12 months preceding the survey. The proportion of the population who used cannabis did not change substantially compared with 2023, except among those aged 35 and over, for whom a statistically significant increase in the proportion of cannabis users was observed.

Reasons for using cannabis

In 2024, cannabis users reported consuming cannabis for fun (80%), to relax (79%), to socialize (69%), to get high (49%), and to sleep better (45%).

The share of cannabis users who consumed it because they are hooked or must have it increased from 9% in 2022 to 12% in 2024.

Frequency of use

In 2024, about 17% of people who used cannabis in the 12 months preceding the survey did so daily, nearly 23% used it regularly (1 to 6 days a week), 18% used it occasionally (1 to 3 days a month), and nearly 42% used it less than once a month. At the provincial level, this means that around 3.0% of people aged 15 and over used cannabis daily, 4.1% used it regularly, 3.2% used it occasionally, and 8% used it less than once a month over that period.

Vaping and other methods of cannabis consumption

Nearly 81% of people who used cannabis in the 12 months preceding the survey smoked it, 32% consumed it in food, and 21% consumed it in the form of oral drops. Still among people who used cannabis in the year preceding the survey, 1 in 4 (25%) vaped it, which represents 4.5% of the Québec population.

The proportion of users aged 15 to 20 who vaped cannabis in the previous year decreased from 62% in 2023 to 57% in 2024. This is the first time that a decline is seen in this age group, as increases had been observed in the last editions of the survey.

In 2024, among those who vaped cannabis in the 12 months preceding the survey, about 72% did so no more than 3 days a month, around 19% vaped cannabis 1 to 6 days a week, and about 9% vaped it every day.

Main sources of cannabis consumed

In 2024, nearly 69% of Quebecers aged 15 and over who used cannabis in the 12 months preceding the survey obtained at least some of it from SQDC.

About 36% of users sourced cannabis from a family member, a friend or an acquaintance, and nearly 13% acquired it in person from a legal source in another province.

Perceptions towards cannabis

In 2024, about 61% of Quebecers aged 15 and over considered occasional cannabis use for non-medical purposes to be socially acceptable, down slightly from 63% in 2022. The majority (86%) of Quebecers consider that cannabis consumption reduces a person’s ability to drive a vehicle.

Accidental consumption

Lastly, it is estimated that 1.9% of Quebecers have had a person or an animal consume cannabis by accident in their home in the year preceding the survey. This information is made available for the first time in Québec based on data from the Québec Cannabis Survey.
