Statistics Canada is currently revising its macroeconomic accounts data by updating the reference year for its estimates from base year 2012 to base year 2017. However, annual GDP data by province with 2017 as the base year were released on November 8, while monthly GDP data for Canada with 2017 as the base year will be released on November 30. Both of these datasets are used to calculate Québec’s monthly GDP by industry, which means that there is currently an overlap.
In order to successfully transition to the new base year while ensuring the consistency of its methods, the Institut de la statistique du Québec has decided that, for now, it will continue to present its monthly GDP estimates by industry for Québec with 2012 as the base year for the period from January 1997 to August 2023. Starting with the next release on December 21, 2023, Québec’s monthly GDP estimates by industry will be published under base year 2017, and the data will be revised retroactively to January 1997 using this new base year.
