    Release: November21, 2023

Statistics Canada is making important changes that affect the international merchandise trade data to be released on December 6, 2023. These changes mainly relate to:

    • The transition to the 2022 version of the North American Product Classification System (NAPCS 2022).
    • The new base year 2017 for export and import price indexes (previously base year 2012).
    • The historical revision of data from 1988 under NAPCS 2022.

For its part, the Institut de la statistique du Québec will be making the following changes:

    • Adjustments will be made to certain import data to record Québec imports that are cleared in another province, in accordance with NAPCS 2022.
    • Seasonal adjustment models for import and export series will be modified in accordance with NAPCS 2022.
    • Seasonal adjustment models for international trade price indexes in base year 2017 will be modified in accordance with NAPCS 2022.
    • Statistics for January 2017 to October 2023 will be published in 2017 constant dollars.

The Institut may decide to postpone its release of international merchandise trade data for the reference month of October 2023 by a few days in order to fully integrate the changes made to NAPCS and the new price index reference year.
