    Life History Intestinal Health Study (IHS) 2021

    This study aims to better understand the role of certain factors that are present at different stages of life (such as diet or antibiotic use during childhood) in the development of inflammatory bowel diseases. The study targets both people who have inflammatory bowel diseases and those who do not.

    What is the Institut de la statistique du Québec?

    The Institut de la statistique du Québec, also known as Statistique Québec, is a government agency whose mission is to produce, analyze and disseminate official, objective and quality statistics on various aspects of Québec society.

    How do I participate in the study?

    To participate in the survey, you simply have to:

    • go to the following Internet address: statistique.quebec.ca/ihs ;
    • enter your identifier;
    • create a password; and
    • complete the online questionnaire.

    If necessary, you can exit the questionnaire and return to finish it at a more convenient time.

    Before answering the questionnaire, we invite you to complete the document you received by mail. It will serve as a reference to record important events in your life, which will make it easier for you to respond to the questionnaire. You can access the document customized based on your year of birth with this link: statistique.quebec.ca/en/produit/publication/ihs-documents

    If you do not have access to the Internet, Statistique Québec will call you to complete the questionnaire over the phone. If you are not available when we call, you can let us know what time would be more convenient for you.
    Why was I chosen for the study?

    You were selected from a group of people born in Québec between 1970 and 1974. Please note that this study is aimed both at people who have inflammatory bowel diseases and people who do not.

    We obtained the personal information needed for the study, including your contact information, from the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ), under an agreement approved by the Commission d’accès à l’information in accordance with the Act respecting Access to documents held by public bodies and the Protection of personal information.

    Do I have to take part in this study?

    Your participation in this study is voluntary, but important, as it will contribute to a greater understanding of the links between life trajectories and certain inflammatory bowel diseases, and will help us better understand how to prevent these diseases.

    Are phone calls recorded?

    For quality and training purposes, telephone conversations with Statistique Québec agents are recorded. If you do not want your conversation to be recorded, simply notify the agent at the beginning of the call.

    What is Statistique Québec’s privacy policy?

    The Act respecting the Institut de la statistique du Québec guarantees that the information you provide will be kept confidential and will only be used for statistical purposes. All Statistique Québec employees have taken an oath before a commissioner and are bound to maintain the secrecy and confidentiality of the data they collect.

    Will you share my answers with other individuals or organizations?

    Statistique Québec has entered into an agreement with the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and the Centre hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine, to whom the information collected will be sent, with the exception of your name, address, and telephone number. All of your information will be kept confidential and will only be used for statistical purposes.

    Does Statistique Québec have an ethical framework?

    Yes. The study was reviewed by the ethics committee appointed by Statistique Québec. This committee is responsible for safeguarding the respect, dignity and integrity of those participating or included in the study.

    Why are you asking my permission to link my answers to selected data from the Québec health care system?

    In order to create a complete picture of the causes of inflammatory bowel diseases, we will establish links between your answers on your health and lifestyle habits, and other data on your use of health services.

    Can I fill out the questionnaire for my child or spouse?

    The questionnaire is personal and can only be filled out by the person who was selected for the study.
