Environment and Intestinal Health Study, 2020

This study aims to better understand the factors responsible for inflammatory bowel diseases and their role during different life stages.

What is the Institut de la statistique du Québec?

The Institut de la statistique du Québec, also known as Statistique Québec, is a government agency whose mission is to produce, analyze and disseminate official, objective and quality statistics on various aspects of Québec society.

How do I participate in the study?

Starting November 2020, Statistique Québec will get in contact with participants by phone to complete a 30-minutes questionnaire. If you are not available when we call, you can let us know what time would be more convenient for you. Because many questions require searching for information, we strongly suggest that you start by filling out the paper version of the document, which you can access by clicking on this link: www.stat.gouv.qc.ca/collecte/p410-quest_an.pdf.

Why was I chosen for the study?

You have been selected from a group of people born in Québec between 1970 and 1974. Please note that this study is aimed both at people who have inflammatory bowel diseases and people who do not.

We have obtained from the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) the contact information necessary to carry out the study under an agreement approved by the Commission d’accès à l’information in accordance with the Act respecting Access to documents held by public bodies and the Protection of personal information.

Do I have to take part in this study?

Your participation in this study is voluntary, but important, as it will contribute to a greater understanding of the links between life trajectories and some inflammatory bowel diseases, as well as how to prevent these diseases.

    Are phone calls recorded?

For quality and training purposes, phone conversations with Statistique Québec agents are recorded. However, if you don’t want the call to be recorded, simply mention it at the beginning of the call.

What is Statistique Québec’s privacy policy?

The Act respecting the Institut de la statistique du Québec guarantees that the information you provide will be kept confidential and will only be used for statistical purposes. All Statistique Québec employees have taken an oath before a commissioner and are bound to maintain the secrecy and confidentiality of the data they collect.

Will you share my answers with other individuals or organizations?

Statistique Québec has signed an agreement with the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and the Centre hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine, to whom the collected information will be sent with the exception of your name, address, and telephone number. All of your information will be kept confidential and will only be used for statistical purposes.

Does Statistique Québec have an ethical framework?

Yes. The study was reviewed by an ethics committee appointed by Statistique Québec. This committee is responsible for safeguarding the respect, dignity and integrity of those participating or included in the study.

Why are you asking my permission to link my answers to selected data from the Québec health care system?

In order to create a complete picture of the causes of inflammatory bowel diseases, we will establish links between your answers on your health and lifestyle habits, and other data on your use of health services.

Can I fill out the questionnaire for my child or spouse?

The questionnaire is personal and can only be filled out by the person who was selected for the study.
