Montréal, July 9, 2021. – En juillet 2021, le Québec compte 4 299 100 personnes en emploi (+ 7 500; + 0,2 % par rapport au mois précédent). Le taux de chômage s’établit à 6,1 % (– 0,2 point de pourcentage). C’est ce qui ressort des résultats de l’Enquête sur la population active de Statistique Canada diffusés aujourd’hui.
L’emploi en juillet 2021 a ainsi progressé de 771 700 depuis mai 2020, ce qui correspond à un peu plus de 93 % des 825 900 emplois perdus entre février et avril 2020.
En juillet 2021, par rapport à juin, l’emploi à temps plein (+ 16 100) et celui à temps partiel (– 8 600) varient peu. L’emploi s’accroît dans le secteur privé (+ 23 900), diminue dans le secteur public (– 15 300) et varie peu chez les travailleurs autonomes (– 1 000). Le taux d’activité reste stable, à 64,5 %. Le taux d’emploi augmente de 0,1 point et se fixe à 60,6 %.
Au Canada, l’emploi augmente de 94 000 (+ 0,5 %) en juillet. Le taux de chômage s’établit à 7,5 % (– 0,3 point). Les plus fortes croissances de l’emploi sont notées en Ontario (+ 72 400) et en Alberta (+ 12 300).
Au cours des sept premiers mois de 2021, comparativement à la même période de 2020, l’emploi a augmenté de 201 100 au Québec. La hausse s’observe principalement dans l’emploi à temps plein (+ 148 300; + 52 700 pour l’emploi à temps partiel). Par rapport à la moyenne des sept premiers mois de 2020, le taux de chômage au Québec a baissé de 3,1 points pour se fixer à 6,7 % (Canada : – 1,7 point, à 8,1 %).

Warning about the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on LFS data
The effects of the COVID-19 crisis on the labour market in June should be interpreted with caution when analyzing the results of the Labour Force Survey (LFS).
The survey reference period for July 2021 was July 11‒17. Correctly categorizing a person’s activity status according to the usual definitions of employment, unemployment1 and inactivity may have been more difficult in this edition of the survey, as it has been since the COVID-19 crisis began. The COVID-19 section of the Institut de la statistique du Québec website provides analyses of the impact of the pandemic in Québec. It should also be noted that the monthly data are based on a sample and thus subject to some variability.
[1] In the Labor Force Survey, an unemployed person is defined as a person who, during the reference period: 1) had been temporarily laid off, but expected to be called back to work and was available for work; 2) was unemployed, had actively sought employment in the past four weeks, and was available for work; or 3) was scheduled to start a new job within four weeks of the reference week and was available for work.
