    Québec’s real GDP at basic prices up 0.5% in October 2022

    Québec, January 25, 2023. – In October 2022, Québec’s real gross domestic product (GDP) at basic prices was up 0.5% following a 0.3% decrease in September. This was revealed in the publication Produit intérieur brut par industrie au Québec, octobre 2022 released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

    Service output up 0.5%

    Output in the service industries grew 0.5% in October after a 0.1% increase in September. Wholesale trade (+3.1%) and retail trade (+1.3%) are the sectors that contributed the most to the increase in October, while accommodation and food services declined by 1.3%.

    Production of goods rose by 0.5%

    Output in the goods-producing industries was up 0.5% in October, after a 1.6% decline in September. In October, mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction (+6.4%) and agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting (+6.1%) experienced significant increases, while manufacturing was down 1.5%.

    The drop in manufacturing real GDP in October came from a decline in 15 of its 19 subsectors, including fabricated metal product manufacturing (-7.0%) and food manufacturing (-3.5%).

    Cumulative total for the first ten months of 2022: Québec’s real GDP up 3.1%

    For the first ten months of 2022, Québec’s real GDP was 3.1% higher than in the same months of 2021. The sectors that contributed the most to this increase are professional, scientific and technical services (+5.7%), accommodation and food services (+24.8%), manufacturing (+3.0%), transportation and warehousing (+10.9%), and educational services (+5.8%).

    According to data published by Statistics Canada on December 23, 2022, Canada’s real GDP at basic prices rose by 0.1% in October 2022 from the previous month. Service-producing industries increased by 0.3%, while goods-producing industries decreased by 0.7%.
