Québec, July 26, 2022. – In April 2022, Québec’s real gross domestic product (GDP) at basic prices was down 0.1% from the previous month, after increasing 0.7% in March. This was revealed in Produit intérieur brut par industrie au Québec, avril 2022 released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
Goods output declined by 0.6%
Output in the goods-producing industries decreased by 0.6% in April following a 0.9% gain in March. This decline was mainly due to the construction (-1.4%) and utilities (-1.8%) sectors. Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting also posted a significant decrease (-2.0%). On the other hand, manufacturing was up 0.5%.
Manufacturing growth in April was driven primarily by increases in the machinery manufacturing (+4.6%), fabricated metal product manufacturing (+3.9%), and primary metal manufacturing (+3.4%) subsectors.
Service production up 0.1%
After a 0.7% gain in March, output in the service industries rose by 0.1% in April. This increase was mainly due to transportation and warehousing (+2.2%), professional, scientific and technical services (+1.0%), arts, entertainment and recreation (+6.3%), and retail trade (+0.6%). In contrast, the wholesale trade and finance and insurance sectors declined by 1.6% and 0.7%, respectively, in April.
Cumulative total for the first four months of 2022: Québec’s real GDP up 4.2%
For the first four months of 2022, Québec’s real GDP was 4.2% higher than in the same months of 2021. The sectors that contributed the most to this increase are manufacturing (+5.3%), accommodation and food services (+41.0%), professional, scientific and technical services (+5.6%), transportation and warehousing (+10.3%), educational services (+5.9%), and retail trade (+4.5%).

Canada’s real GDP at basic prices up 0.3% in April 2022
According to data published by Statistics Canada on June 30, 2022, Canada’s real GDP at basic prices increased by 0.3% in April 2022 from the previous month. Goods-producing industries rose by 0.9%, while service-producing industries grew 0.1%.
