    Québec’s real GDP at basic prices up 0.1% in January 2021

    Québec, April 27, 2021. – Québec’s real gross domestic product (GDP) at basic prices was up 0.1% in January 2021, following a 0.3% increase in December 2020. This was revealed in Produit intérieur brut par industrie au Québec, janvier 2021 published today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

    As a result, the GDP level in January 2021 was about 98% of the level in February 2020.

    Production of goods up 1.7%

    Goods-producing industries grew 1.7% in January, after increasing 1.2% in December. The increase in goods production in January came mainly from the construction sector (+4.2%). Output was also up in manufacturing (+0.8%) and mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction (+4.0%).

    Manufacturing growth was mainly due to the following subsectors: machinery manufacturing (+7.7%), primary metal manufacturing (+6.3%), plastics and rubber products manufacturing (+6.7%), and transportation equipment manufacturing (+2.6%). However, chemical manufacturing declined by 10.0%.

    Service production down 0.5%

    Service-producing industries decreased by 0.5% in January. The drop came mainly from retail trade (-10.0%). In contrast, wholesale trade (+3.6%), public administration (+1.0%) and health care and social assistance (+0.7%) registered increases.

    January 2021 versus January 2020: Québec’s real GDP down 2.7%

    In January 2021, Québec’s real GDP was 2.7% lower than in January 2020. The sectors that contributed the most to the drop in GDP over this period were accommodation and food services (-47.3%), transportation and warehousing (-18.4%), manufacturing (-5.2%), retail trade (-9.0%), arts, entertainment and recreation (-47.2%), and educational services (-6.0%).

    Canada’s real GDP at basic prices up 0.7% in January 2021

    According to data published by Statistics Canada on March 31, 2021, Canada’s real GDP at basic prices grew 0.7% in January 2021. Goods-producing industries and service-producing industries rose by 1.5% and 0.4%, respectively. In January 2021, Canada’s real GDP was 2.3% lower than in the same month in 2020.
